چکیده

This paper develops a sequential random matching model of asset trading to analyze how the extent of information about an asset that is available in the market can affect its tradeability. Liquidity traders are rational agents with higher impatience, which make optimal intertemporal consumption decisions given the trading constraints. Information asymmetries result in unexecuted trades. Agents who want to consume relatively early optimally choose to exchange initial assets for new assets that have lower expected payoff but are more liquid in subsequent trading. These assets have a lower expected rate or return (i.e., a liquidity premium) and higher trading volume. Limelight on dark markets: Theory and experimental evidence on liquidity and information

We investigate how informational frictions affect trading in decentralized markets in theory and in a laboratory setting. Subjects, matched pairwise at random, trade divisible commodities that have different private values for a divisible asset with a common value (interpreted as money). We compare a bargaining game with complete information with a bargaining game where agents can produce fraud...

Inside and Outside Liquidity∗

We consider a model of liquidity demand arising from a possible maturity mismatch between asset revenues and consumption. This liquidity demand can be met with either cash reserves (inside liquidity) or via asset sales for cash (outside liquidity). The questions we address are: (a) what determines the mix of inside and outside liquidity in equilibrium? (b) does the market provide an efficient m...

Outside and Inside Liquidity∗

We consider a model of liquidity demand arising from a possible maturity mismatch between asset revenues and consumption. This liquidity demand can be met with either cash reserves (inside liquidity) or via asset sales for cash (outside liquidity). The question we address is, what determines the mix of inside and outside liquidity in equilibrium? An important source of inefficiency in our model...

Higher Order Expectations, Illiquidity, and Short-term Trading

We propose a theory that jointly accounts for an asset illiquidity and for the asset price potential over-reliance on public information. We argue that, when trading frequencies differ across traders, asset prices reflect investors’ Higher Order Expectations (HOEs) about the two factors that influence the aggregate demand: fundamentals information and liquidity trades. We show that it is precis...

Random Risk Aversion and Liquidity: a Model of Asset Pricing and Trade Volumes

Grossman, Campbell, and Wang (1993), and Pastor and Stambaugh (2003), among others present evidence that liquidity based on a measure of trading volume behaves as a factor in accounting for expected returns on risky assets. We present a tractable theoretical model where trade volume is a pricing factor, beyond the standard ones. In the model agents experience idiosyncratic shocks to risk aversi...
